Homelessness and its effect on young individuals' aggressive and addictive behaviours

Lead Research Organisation: King's College London
Department Name: Psychology

Abstract

I am interested in investigating how children and adolescent development can be affected by the socioeconomic factors that they are raised in. Through completing a Masters in Mental Health Studies at King's College London I intend to broaden my knowledge of quantitative research methods and community and social perception of mental health problems. While completing this course, I will further develop a connection and a research partnership with London youth homelessness charities. Starting from my first year as a PhD candidate in the Developmental Psychopathology Lab I will collect data from those charities on conduct problems and addictive behaviours observed in young adolescents who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. My research will then investigate the short and long term effects of the environmental conditions while one is homeless and how this affects antisocial and addictive behaviours in young individuals between the ages of 14 and 25.
