The use of FES in amputee rehabilitation

Lead Research Organisation: Imperial College London
Department Name: Dept of Bioengineering

Abstract

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) can be used to change muscle activation patterns in order to both change the internal distribution of muscle and joint forces as well as enhance the ability to achieve motor control tasks. This PhD will harness new FES technology to both reduce fatigue of specific muscles (such as rectus femoris) in the above-knee amputee as well as increase performance in activities of daily living.
