Cross-laminated timber deep beams

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Engineering

Abstract

The aim of the project is to explore the current lack of knowledge on load paths through CLT beams or walls that include window or door holes and help improve an understanding of the behaviour of the material in this area.

The objectives are:
1. State of the art review of the existing literature and the current practices of the industry regarding the design of CLT structures.
2. Keep close contact with industry to gain insight into the applicability of the project to industry and interest from industry.
3. Focus on a sub-set of challenges of CLT construction and conduct experiments to analyse the material behaviour.
4. Compose computer models of the behaviour and calibrate the models with experimental data to further improve knowledge on the relationship between material, section geometry and
properties.
5. Address sustainability, environmental impact, cost, commercialisation aspects etc.
