Towards Earth-Abundant Electrolysers for Hydrogen Production

Abstract

Over the past decades, focus on renewable fuels has increased due to the continuing environmental damage done by fossil fuels and the accompanying threat of global climate change. Hydrogen is a proposed energy storage medium and fuel, however, the large-scale production of sustainable, affordable green hydrogen fuel needs to be achieved. The need for precious metal oxides of iridium and ruthenium as catalysts for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) in polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysers remains a major barrier to implementation. The focus of this project will be to develop novel electrocatalysts for the OER which retain the excellent durability and catalytic ability of precious metal catalysts but instead incorporate more abundant elements such as main group metals and first row transition elements, thereby offering greater affordability and potential for wider implementation compared to existing technologies.
