Fast shuttling of trapped ion with invariant quantum control

Lead Research Organisation: Imperial College London
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

The ability to shuttle ions between different spatial regions in a structured trapping geometry
is a central requisite for making trapped ions a scalable quantum technology. Since quantum logic gates rely on
the motional state of ions to be sufficiently close to the ground state, it is important that a shuttling protocol
does not leave an ion in an excited motional state. This can be achieved for example with adiabatic protocols,
but the inherent slowness of such protocols is conflicting with the necessity to perform operations within the
limitations imposed by decoherence
