Climate Collaborations in the Arts: How arts organisations are responding to the climate crisis

Abstract
The project will investigate the role of the arts and cultural sector in tackling climate change and in leading responses to environmental emergencies in local and global contexts. It will study how two major third sector organisations in Britain and Brazil - Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation UK and Inhotim Institute - are seeking to understand what effective steps they can take to embrace and advocate for change through the curation, production and support for arts practices.
CGF(UK) is a London-based charitable organisation focused on building coalitions to tackle complex global problems and on supporting arts organisations articulating their civic role. Inhotim is home to one of Latin America's largest contemporary art collections in a botanical garden. Its neighbouring community was the site of one of Brazil's biggest dam disasters.
The research will enable the doctoral researcher to work with both organisations to identify and share learnings about their innovative responses in North-South contexts, and the findings will be of benefit to the wider cultural sector within and beyond the UK and Brazil, in promoting environmental awareness by community building, make meaning, and taking action. The research will also be relevant to networks of policymakers engaged with climate change at local and international levels.
