The heaviest black holes below the pair-instability limit

Lead Research Organisation: Queen's University Belfast
Department Name: Sch of Mathematics and Physics

Abstract

The aim of the project is to investigate very massive stars, especially their final stages, with an ultimate objective of determining the conditions for black hole formations in these extreme stars. Very massive stars are defined as having a mass larger than 50 solar masses, as these stars will behave differently to other massive stars typically given as greater than 8 solar masses. However, this boundary is not clearly defined and there are different answers as to where exactly the boundary to very massive stars exist.
