New luminescent and paramagnetic agents for use as biosensors

Lead Research Organisation: Cardiff University
Department Name: Chemistry

Abstract

The aim of this project is to investigate new compounds for use as biosensors including applications in the detection of pathogens, and bioimaging disciplines. The project will involve training in the chemical synthesis of both small molecules, including metal coorination complexes, and functionalised magnetic nanoparticles, and will utilise a wide variety of analytical, spectroscopic (including NMR, UV-vis., fluorescence, circular dichroism, and electron paramagnetic resonance) and biophysical methods (including titration calorimetry) to fully characterise their behaviour. There is extensive scope for developing new materials and evaluating their applications.
The project is embedded within an interdisciplinary training and research program focussed on Biosensors and Diagnostics, and you will be expected to work closely with the other PhD students in your cohort who are based in the Schools of Pharmacy, Engineering and Biosciences. Further collaboration will be possible with researchers from other disciplines including public health bodies and industry.
