Decolonising Hong Kong: Civil Society and Political Participation During the End of British Rule, 1982-97

The existing literature on the decolonisation of Hong Kong (1982-97) has seen this period largely from the perspective of British and Chinese political actors. This project will go beyond the elite political level to analyse the impact of public opinion, civil society actors and business leaders upon Hong Kong's decolonisation. Using recently declassified archives, autobiographies, interviews and sources at imminent risk of being lost, this project will reconceptualise the notion of political power and uncover how the public sought a political voice in Hong Kong's future.
