Research in Exoplanetary Atmospheric Chemistry

Abstract

This project will involve modelling the chemistry of exoplanetary atmospheres, probably starting with sulphur chemistry in Venus' atmosphere as a test case of a near tidally-locked planet with good observations and a whole atmosphere model (the Paris PCM-Mars model) currently running at Leeds. The exoplanets that will be explored will be chosen based on recent and current observations made by the CoRot, Kepler, JWST, TESS and CHEOPS space telescopes, particularly where observations of atmospheric constituents are now being made for the first time. The selected planets will be explored by adapting the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (a whole atmosphere general circulation model). Some experimental work may also be undertaken to support the model development.
