Vacuum hollow-core optical fibres

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC)

Abstract

The PhD project will investigate theory and numerical simulations to aid the development of evacuated hollow-core optical fibres, including their design and optimisation and appropriate characterisation techniques. This will mainly include optical methods exploiting linear and nonlinear laser pulse propagation in such fibres where the hollow core exhibits a non-uniform and (during evacuation) time-dependent air pressure. Moreover, applications of such evacuated fibres will be considered, e.g. for laser power delivery, minimum-noise interferometers, and transmission at extreme wavelengths where air exhibits strong losses.
