Ultracold mixtures of Cs and Yb: droplets and polar molecules.

Abstract
This is an experimental project to study the properties of ultracold atomic mixtures of Cs and Yb. This combination of elements is exceptionally rich and offers unique opportunities for independently controlling the individual gases with applied magnetic and optical fields. The ultracold gases are produced using standard laser cooling techniques and then trapped in an intense laser beam. Further cooling is achieved through evaporation. In this project, the student will exploit these properties to study the dynamics of dual-species Bose-Einstein condensates, with a view to observing a predicted droplet phase. This work involves collaboration with Prof. Simon Gardiner (physics) and the theory group led by Prof. Nick Parker at Newcastle University. The student will also investigate new ways to assemble the atoms into heteronuclear molecules. Feshbach resonances between ground state Cs and Yb atoms have previously been observed in our group. Here, the student will explore use of the metastable state where the resonances are predicted to be better suited to molecule formation. This work involves collaboration with Prof. Jeremy Hutson (chemistry). The overall goals of the project will deliver improved understanding of the fundamental science governing atoms and molecules and their interactions.
