Optimising Gully Blocks to Reduce Flood Discharge
Lead Research Organisation:
Newcastle University
Department Name: Sch of Engineering
Abstract
The project aims to establish the optimum design features for ~10 gully blocks to be implemented into the uplands. This research will eliminate common upscaling errors seen in literature by collecting experimental data using a near 1:1 scale novel analogue model to conduct an in-depth investigation into flow attenuation, through establishing the relationship between discharge and water storage, with particular focus on storm water and peak flow attenuation to reduce downstream discharge. Under supervision from the Environment Agency, the generation of a blueprint for gully block installation across the network in the South Pennines will result from this project.
