Abstract
In my PhD project I will be investigating the extent to which extra-conflict forms of child exploitation can be considered as a consequence of the recruitment and use of child soldiers. I will be exploring this through a comparative examination of case studies in Colombia, Myanmar/Burma and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Some of the main research points I plan to explore are the extent to which:
1) The use of child soldiers leads to the social and cultural normalisation of child labour, with specific focus on extractive and agricultural industries.
2) Child trafficking is facilitated both nationally and regionally due to established trafficking practices and routes used in recruitment of child soldiers.
3) Children were sold into trafficking after being recruited for the purpose of soldiering.
4) The involvement of former child soldiers in armed and organised crime groups perpetuates conflict and continues child exploitation.
5) Economic harm caused by populational disruption due to the significant loss of life amongst children prompts the need for child labour to augment family incomes.
6) Enduring degradation of social and cultural sentiment towards children resultant from the use of child soldiers leads to the continuation of child exploitation outside of conflict.
