Management of Intermittent Sewage Discharges

Lead Research Organisation: CRANFIELD UNIVERSITY
Department Name: School of Water, Energy and Environment

Abstract

Project objectives include mapping land availability for nature-based solutions around sewage overflow (SO), assessing expected SO contaminant loads through strategic water quality sampling, quantifying pollution, water volume attenuation and co-benefits provided by different nature-based solutions with pilot experiments, and developing a prioritised portfolio of effective nature-based solutions for managing SO in selected catchments based in modelling. The comprehensive research approach combining fieldwork, pilot experiments, and modelling provides a robust framework for integrating nature-based solutions into SO management. This cutting-edge research will look at how to engineer these green technologies to deliver the most environmental benefit, and enable smarter investments in water infrastructure and management, alleviating stress on our water environment and treatment infrastructures, and reducing dependence on grey infrastructure to build resilience and long-term sustainability.
