Tidal Stream Turbine Blade Design for Low Energy Area

Lead Research Organisation: University of Strathclyde
Department Name: Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Abstract

This project focuses on optimizing blade design for tidal stream turbines operating in low energy areas. It aims to improve efficiency and reduce costs by investigating topics related to the design, structural integrity or material selection of the blade. The blade is a critical component affecting turbine efficiency and lifespan, so optimizing its design is vital to the success of tidal energy. As most existing tidal turbine technologies are focused for high-velocity conditions, they will face implementation challenges for countries with naturally lower tidal velocity. This research addresses that gap by developing cost-effective, high-performance blades for low-energy environments. Tidal energy is predictable and readily available in the ocean, yet underutilized. As the principles of tidal stream turbines are similar to those of wind turbines, the literature review will be conducted based on the existing research on low-velocity wind turbines. The outcome is expected to contribute to more affordable and sustainable offshore energy solutions, particularly in low-energy areas, and to provide a foundation for future research in this growing field.
