How did Russia acquire, and then lose, a free and independent media?

Abstract
I am tracking the history of Russia's independent media, from the collapse of the Soviet Union to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. I am trying to understand how Russia's independent media came to be pushed out of the country, and what mechanisms need to be put in place for Russia to regain a free and robust media that is not under state control.
