Aspects of black hole mechanics

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Applied Maths and Theoretical Physics

Abstract

the project will investigate several new developments in black hole mechanics. It will study recently discovered violations of the third law of black hole mechanics, aiming to prove that such violations cannot occur for supersymmetric black holes in various theories. It will also consider black hole mechanics in effective field theories of gravity. In some such theories, there is a well-defined notion of causality that differs from the usual notion of causality defined with respect to the metric tensor. The project will investigate the laws of black hole mechanics for black holes defined using this notion of causality.
