This chapter identifies a significant lacuna in researching religious authority in education. Based on findings from an Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project in which the author conducted fifty interviews with senior religious leaders and authority figures in England, I present a working definition of religious authority and a further justification or warrant for engagement with religious authority in educational research.
