Lead Research Organisation: University of the West of England
Department Name: Fac Creative Arts, Humanities &Education

Abstract

Over the past ten years, interest in British writing of the Second World War has flourished as hitherto forgotten works are re discovered. Critical attention has cantered on topic including the representation of the city at war or on gender related issues. Narratives of Memory: British writing in the 1940s' identifies memory as a previously unexamined concern in both literary and popular writing of this period. It will trace development in narrative, especially the novel, during the war years and immediately after, emphasising the use of memory as both a structural device and a theme in the writing of this decade.
