A Test of the Inverse Square Law of Gravitation

Lead Research Organisation: University of Birmingham
Department Name: School of Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

This project consists of developing an instrument that is capable of measuring the force of gravity between objects with separations of the order of 10 micrometres. We are developing a superconducting torsion balance in order to do this. The work involves the development of a capacitive sensor that can operate at cryogenic temperatures and be insensitive to stray-capacitance, while still offering a good SNR. We have also worked on modelling the magnetic forces involved in the instrument.
