Photographic Collecting in the National Art Library

Abstract
The National Art Library collected around 300,000 photographs for the purpose of image reference from the 1850s to the 1970s. Taking the 68 volumes of Photographic Registers, this research considers in detail the sources of photographs, the reasons why they were collected, and how they were used, both within the Victoria and Albert Museum and externally.
The research will assess the effect this collection had on photography as a tool for scholarship of all kinds.
