Places of Hostility or Hospitality? Media Representation and Female Muslim Refugees' Social Integration in Local Communities in Germany

Lead Research Organisation: University of Bristol
Department Name: Sociology

Abstract

Germany has received unprecedented numbers of Muslim refugees arriving since 2015 (BAMF, 2016). Female Muslim refugee's integration experiences in Germany are distinctive as they are the most impacted by social exclusion, isolation and negative public perceptions (FRA, 2016). Research is needed to understand the particular experiences of female Muslim refugees in areas of settlement. This thesis aims to provide a female-focused study concentrating on everyday social integration experiences of Muslim refugees in three German communities.
