Lead Research Organisation: Durham University
Department Name: Archaeology

Abstract

A novel combination of GIS and experimental methods will be utilised to analyze the Paeololithic visual art at Gonnersdorf, Germany, to explore the function of Magdalenian engravings discovered within its archaeological sites. Collaborative research will be undertaken using archaeology and visual psychology to examine and identify visual and spatial relaitonships between engraved slate and artefact associaitons within their wider landscape. Drawing upon groundwork carried out by leading archaeology and psychology specialists at Durham University, this research will develop an original and more accessible corpus of the art and archaeology of the Magdalenian Culture at Gönnersdorf.
