Title Dissolution, recovery and separation of strategic metals for recycling of lithium-ion batteries using deep eutectic solvents

Abstract

This research involves the development of characterisation techniques for lithium ion batteries, focusing on morphological, mechanical and thermal techniques to understand how battery materials are held together and how to effectively separate them in an economic and time-efficient manner. This is paired with a techno-economic assessment of current recycling techniques to investigate the feasibility of scale-up and the theoretical cost of recycling a lithium-ion battery. This feeds into the development of solvent-assisted mechanical separation techniques, followed by the selective dissolution and recovery of metals using deep eutectic solvents and precipitation methods. Finally, an investigation into water-soluble binders in anodes aims to minimise degradation and improve recyclability of lithium-ion batteries.
