Investigation into the noise from small packaged compressors

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: Sch of Engineering

Abstract

This project is a fundamental study into the noise generation mechanisms of small high speed fans and the effects of its installation within commercial products, such as hairdryers and vacuum cleaners. This project, which is predominantly experimental, aims to establish the link between package driven losses and the radiated noise. The project will be centred on a new ducted rig. A key part of this project will be to develop the measurement techniques required to measure and characterise the noise as well as to characterise the mean and turbulent flow in the vicinity of the compressor blades.
