Immigration Control as Revenue Regime: Mapping the Contours and Consequences

Lead Research Organisation: Swansea University
Department Name: College of Law

Abstract

In collaboration with Migrant Action, the project focuses on the interplay between charging regimes and
(hostile) immigration control policies. It aims to address the paucity of such research, whilst examining the
potential of 'crimmigration' as a theoretical framework to facilitate an assessment of the relationship
between criminalisation and immigration enforcement mediated through charging regimes.
Research ethics approval will be sought prior to undertaking any empirical work (e.g. qualitative interviews
with migrants, lawyers, third-sector representatives, representatives of statutory and local authority
agencies). The applicant will be supported by her supervisory team, who have relevant experience in
addressing a broad range of researcher safety and wellbeing issues arising from researching sensitive issues;
augmented by support provided by Migrant Action (including office space to conduct interviews - subject to
COVID-19 restrictions).
