The impact of the environment on antibiotic accumulation and susceptibility

Lead Research Organisation: University of Birmingham
Department Name: Institute of Microbiology and Infection

Abstract

Antibiotics underpin modern medicine, enabling surgery, chemotherapy, and enhance survival within immunosuppressed populations. Whilst we have a relatively good understanding of the factors that influence how well antibiotics work in vitro, our knowledge of antibiotic susceptibility during infection is extremely limited. This project will uncover how the host environment alters bacterial physiology and how this alters accumulation of and susceptibility to clinical antibiotics.
