Membrane Photonic crystal lasers: Towards compact, high performance nano-scale lasers

Lead Research Organisation: Queen's University Belfast
Department Name: Sch of Mathematics and Physics

Abstract

"Semiconductor membranes promise a route towards nanscale lasers that can operate with high efficiency and at high speed. The aim of this project is to explore ultra-thin strained semiconductor membranes within photonic crystal cavities. The project will explore the extent to which strain can be used to enhance efficiency and the optimum photonic crystal geometries to produce nano-scale laser cavities. The project will include a combination of design and experimental fabrication and characterisation activities, and the level of each will be tailored to the interests of the students engaged in the project.
