Thermodynamic and dynamical stability of quantum corrected black holes

Lead Research Organisation: Imperial College London
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

Recent results have shown the existence of new classes of black hole and other types of solution to gravity enhanced by quadratic curvature terms, whose incorporation renders the theory renormalisable. A main aim of the project will be to study the relative stability properties of such new solutions with respect to the Schwarzschild solution, which is now known to become unstable in a low-mass phase with a bound determined by the single negative eigenvalue of the Lichnerowicz operator. The approach will be both from black-hole theormodynamics and also by direct study of quasinormal modes.
