What works to prevent children going into care?

Lead Research Organisation: CARDIFF UNIVERSITY
Department Name: Sch of Social Sciences

Abstract

This ethnographic study seeks to explore the impact of poverty and community parenting on families who are deemed to be at risk of their children being removed. It aims to develop a community response to supporting families to remain together; one that acknowledges the effects of structural disadvantage and fits within the local context of parenting. Through ethnographic and action research it aims to inform practice responses with regards to working with families living in poverty to manage children's safety.

Research questions:
What are families' perspectives on "safe" parenting and child welfare within their community? How do parents achieve this? Are there collective understandings of "good" and "bad" parenting within the community?
How do families understand the impact of poverty and deprivation on parenting? What affects the ability of families living with deprivation promote their children's wellbeing/safety?
How can the local community be engaged in developing family support responses to promoting children's safety?
