Data journalism, collaboration and accountability during COVID-19

Lead Research Organisation: CARDIFF UNIVERSITY
Department Name: Journalism Media and Cultural Studies

Abstract

The coverage of the Covid-19 crisis has elevated the role of data journalism in several respects. Data-driven analysis has been a central component of news coverage at the same time as the datafication of political processes (including health policy) has accelerated, requiring new accountability mechanisms. Taking influence from Baack's (2017) interpretation of data journalism as a cross-organisational practice, and Diakopoulos' (2015) research on algorithmic accountability reporting, this project aims to explore the changing nature of data journalism in the context of the pandemic and the extent to which it is changing the focus of journalism, alongside its practices, to advance its democratic potential.
