Clinking of DP800 Steel Slabs

Lead Research Organisation: Imperial College London
Department Name: Mechanical Engineering

Abstract

Clinking is characterised as an audible cracking sound heard during the cool down of as-cast steel slabs in the slab yard, or during heat-up prior to hot rolling. This can lead to catastrophic slab failure, and as a result, yield losses or significant process interruptions. The aim of this project is to develop a mechanistic understanding of the cause of clinking in DP800 steels and determine the conditions that promote clinking of steel slabs, thus enabling clicking to be avoided in practice.
