Lead Research Organisation: University of East London
Department Name: Cass School of Education & Communities

Abstract

According to UNHCR (2021) more than 82 million people were forced to leave their home countries; among them, there is an unaccounted community of LGBTQ+ people. This mostly invisible group faces rejection and persecution by the state and their families, but more importantly, often experience
personal conflict due to internalised heteronormative discourses and values. The proposed project focuses on the impact of heteronormativity on LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ refugees, and its effects on their identity, sense of belonging and wellbeing.
