Investigation of New Conductive Carbon Materials for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lead Participant: OXIS ENERGY LIMITED

Abstract

Lithium-Sulfur batteries have been of great interest in recent years due primarily to their theoretical specific energy being several times greater that of Li-ion systems. However, Lithium-Sulfur batteries suffer from the issue of high internal resistance due to fact that sulfur is an electrical insulator resulting in poor performance.
Here OXIS aim to determine the feasibility of using a combination of two different conductive carbon materials within the sulfur containing cathode in order to produce cathodes with a modified structure and hence improved electrical conductivity. We aim to demonstrate testing of such cathodes within Lithium-Sulfur pouch cells to show lower internal resistance and improved performance.
