Magnetic induction heating method for stun and dispatch of slaughter weight broilers

Abstract

There's an urgent need for more humane dispatch methods for poultry in slaughterhouses. Stunning is commonly used to render the animal unconscious prior to exsanguination. However, these methods have high capital and running costs and/or significant welfare issues. This project will build a RF induction heating prototype to examine the feasibility of using RF induction heating techniques as a stunning and/or dispatching method for poultry. Prior work suggests that this may be possible, and now we want to build a RF induction heating commercial prototype unit, install it at a licenced premises, and undertake initial proof-of-concept tests with live birds.
