Abstract
We propose to extend the capabilities for DSM of large multi-functional electrical generators intended for future civil More Electric Aircraft. Existing models are inadequate for evaluating the conflicting requirements for generators with engine electric start capability. This includes the thermal effects of power electronic drives and heat rejection from the generator local to the engine. Integrated electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical models are needed. The team consists of a major electrical generator supplier (Goodrich), a major airframe manufacturer (Airbus), and academic experts in electrical machine control (UoBristol). The approach will be to integrate existing data and analysis techniques with power electronic component descriptions to create a multi-physics generic model for high power electrical machines. We will demonstrate the model by simulating a 300KVA electric starter-generator and examining system-level trade-offs.
