Envirosurface - Urban Heat Management Eco Paving (High Albedo Index PU-R Composite)

Lead Participant: SJH DRIVEWAYS LIMITED

Abstract

Over 55% of the world's population lives in urban areas, with an estimated increase to 68% by 2050 (UN). The corresponding growth in urbanisation infrastructure has created increased heat pollution, referred to as the Urban-Heat-Island effect (UHI). These heat pollutants contribute to complex air quality problems such as the formation of ground-level ozone (smog) and acid rain as well as negatively impacting local flora, fauna and bodies of water. Electricity demand rises for air-conditioning, increasing emissions of greenhouse gases, contributing to global climate change. The annual mean temperature of a city with \\\>1m people is 1-3°C warmer than its surrounding and can be up to 12°C warmer at night. UHI causes thermal discomfort for people, deteriorating public health due to increased general discomfort, exhaustion, heat-related mortality, respiratory problems and heat stroke.

SJH Driveways (paving specialists) in partnership with the University of Wolverhampton (experts in materials science and engineering) are developing Envirosurface, an innovative reflective paving surface that contains higher levels of UV/IR reflection with a higher albedo index, therefore, absorbing less solar energy and decreasing heat pollution. Alongside the surface's UHI-decreasing properties, it will comprise of recycled materials, be durable with limited deterioration from abrasion and oxidation, and require lower maintenance due to its high structural integrity.

Decreased UHI will reduce electricity costs for air conditioning for commercial businesses and residents and will have a positive effect on people's health with less heat related deaths and discomfort.
