Abstract
An Intra-Operative Dedicated Breast Magnetic Resonance (MR) Scanner for detection, diagnosis, image-guided lesion biopsy and targeted tissue ablation will be built, based on an existing, novel, proprietary MR scanner. Unlike the conventional, cylindrical MR scanners which do not provide for real-time , interactive guidance of biopsy and therapy devices - since the patient has to be pulled out of the magnet for access by the clinician - the proposed intra-operative system will enable the performance of these critical interventional procedures under real-time image guidance, potentially during a single out-patient session thereby shortening patient's journey from diagnosis to therapy and reducing costs. With the expected development of molecular diagnostics leading to early detection of potential cancers, there will be a major demand for image guided lesion localisation and minimally invasive therapy procedures that could be addressed by our novel, Intra-Operative MR Scanner.
