Improving day to day function in children and adults with a disability.

Abstract

Able2B works with children and adults with a disability to give them the opportunity to improve their day to day function. Using medical expertise in functional assessment and Sports' Medicine principles alongside experienced coaching and training staff they aim to show individuals just what can be achieved by using a series of stepwise goals. Sport and exercise is really for everyone, even for those with a physical disability that allows very little or no voluntary movement to individuals with marked learning disabilities and severe autism-Able2B has managed to show just what is possible given the right approach and experience. They show individuals and their carers their abilities rather than their disability. The results have been out-standing with the commonest statement being "I didn't think they/I would be able to do that!". From young children improving to walk without aids and improving physical function that allows potential for independent living later in life to adults after stroke and head injury regaining independence and confidence again, their service in three years has grown not only to cover Norfolk but also further afield with their virtual services. Expanding to develop more face to face centres across the UK is their aim providing support and guidance for individuals with chronic conditions. Their Norwich centre has already shown this is a very cost-effective option over standard NHS pathways for these individuals. Now post-covid where chronic conditions have not got access to regular services whilst the NHS 'catches up' this initiative is even more important to help individuals but also reduce significantly social spending.
