PlantSea Pack - Second Phase

Lead Participant: PLANTSEA LTD

Abstract

PlantSea-Pack is an innovative packaging solution developed by PlantSea for self-care products. The packaging consists of a water-soluble pod for single-use and/or refill-use capable to hold personal care products such as shampoos, conditioners, balms, oils and creams. These pods are made of the unique PlantSea's seaweed-derived film technology.

The adoption of PlantSea pods will foster packaging re-use, by adopting the concept of a re-usable bottle-for-life and promoting the usage of refills of personal care goods (shampoo, conditioner, detergents) and other fluids (cleaning liquids), and support the delivery of Plastic Pact targets. PlantSea-Pack-based refill-pod will dissolve in the bottle for life.

PlantSea-Pack delivered at scale will deliver multiple objectives of the Plastic Pact, as it will:

a) Provide a new non-plastic waste-free product design and investigate the feasibility and scalability of an associated business model to deliver cosmetic products and promote refill at home. This will enable the elimination of millions of non-recyclable plastic parts, for example, the spray pumps and caps, commonly found in bottles.

b) Contribute to reducing the strain on recycling infrastructures, by eliminating complex packaging formats.

c) Raise awareness and provide educational materials on possible approaches for plastic use reduction and reuse to achieve desired changes in consumer behaviour.

d) Build a robust model for assessing sustainability and preventing the substitution of plastics for less sustainable materials, using a complete life cycle and overall systems perspective.
