ECPS - Electroformed composite protection system

Lead Participant: ULTIMA FORMA LTD

Abstract

The aim of ECPS is to determine feasibility of a process which will upgrade lightweight carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) products for extreme environments by adding an integral metal matrix composite (MMC) at the surface. The MMC surface will enable the lightweight CFRP part to withstand high particle erosion and high working temperature (target up to 500°C). Ultima Forma's proprietary electrodeposition process is low temperature so there is no resulting damage to the carbon fibres or the resin beneath.

The project is expected to enable use of recycled materials in high value applications. Electrodeposition is a low energy process, where, if renewable electricity is used, a high value product for extreme environments is created with minimal material resources and very low environmental impact.
