SiSTEM ( SolId state battEry Manufacturing)
Lead Participant:
ILIKA TECHNOLOGIES LTD
Abstract
Ilika Technologies, UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC) and MPAC are partnering in project SiSTEM funded by the Automotive Transformation Fund. SiSTEM intends to accelerate the scale-up of Ilika's solid state battery (SSB) technology. The project will include physical trials using UKBIC's high-volume roll-to-roll coating equipment with Ilika's selected materials. MPAC will design, build and commission a 2MWh/year SSB assembly line representative of scale-manufacturing.
UK Net-Zero Policy outlines all cars manufactured in UK from 2035 must have zero tailpipe emissions. Lithium-ion batteries are the most mature zero-emission technology, but have limitations in cycle-life and energy density, with public concern about battery life, range and safety issues. SSB alleviate these issues with intrinsic properties of higher safety, wider thermal operating range, fast charge and high energy densities. SiSTEM presents an opportunity to engage the UK ecosystem in the scale-up of SSB technology
