Language Interface for Net Zero Innovation (LINZI)

Abstract

Language Interface for Net Zero Innovation (LINZI) aims to revolutionise how domestic and commercial building owners plan for the NetZero transition of their buildings.

Currently, these transitions require a comprehensive understanding of the building fabric, power and heating supply, building usage, and a multitude of cost factors. Although various technical solutions exist, they often lack user-friendliness and accessibility. They are largely built by engineers and architects and create a barrier to general use by having large data requirements and a very structured interface. What sets LINZI apart is its innovative approach: a naturalistic conversational interface that simplifies the complex decision space on Net Zero building refit. It will reduce the barrier that is experience by those considering Net Zero building improvements - what is the best option? How much will it cost? And what is the return on investment?

Leveraging the latest language model techniques, LINZI offers an interactive platform for building owners. Our innovation lies in translating the complexity of engineering, supply chain, and economic modelling into a user-friendly and engaging interface. Instead of confronting users with overwhelming requests for data, LINZI uses public databases (e.g. EPC certificates, surveys, Satellite) to reduce the amount of information that needs gathering, and guides users through the process, prioritising the information needed.

Designed for laypeople, LINZI lowers the barrier of entry to access high-quality information, driving citizen engagement.

Initially, it will integrate with the Retrofit Financial Analysis engine (FRACE) developed by NQM. The project will further explore compatibility with other NetZero evaluation tools. Ultimately, LINZI has the potential to transform how we approach NetZero transitions, making them more accessible, engaging, and understandable for everyone.

Should it be successful, we believe this model has potential for broader application. E.g transport and waste recommendations with NetZero, but also for other front end services provided by local authorities.
