Expired Fire Extinguisher Powder Recycling - Process&Yield Innovations

Lead Participant: PHOS CYCLE LIMITED

Abstract

UK law requires fire extinguishers to be disposed of and replaced every three years. All materials from an expired fire extinguisher are recycled; (i.e., metal cylinders, plastic and rubber hoses, etc.) except for the expired fire extinguisher powder (EFEP). In the UK, 10,000ton of EFEP is land-filled each year at high environmental and increasing economic cost, or worse illegally dumped.

EFEP cannot be reused, as it fails to satisfy the required legal fire-safety and performance criteria.

PhosCycle provides a comprehensive solution at scale to the chemical EFEP waste stream problem, which is currently occupying landfills.

Through its proprietary process, PhosCycle converts the EFEP waste stream to industrial phosphate-based value streams, thereby:

1.Negating the detrimental environmental effects of land-filling

2.Reducing the associated disposal costs for our suppliers

3.Minimizing the incentive for illegal disposal,

4.Providing our customers with a sustainable (zero-carbon) alternative to conventional phosphate-based products,

PhosCycle's innovative technology recovers the valuable components from this waste product so that it can be upcycled back into commercial industries at scale (e.g., agricultural fertilisers).

With an already operational Pilot Plant and IP certified, PhosCycle now plan to complete the final r&d phase to reach commercial scale by 2025\.

This project will accelerate development from TRL6 to TRL8/9, to enable commercialisation, post project.

Our project aims to make the UK the innovation centre for the recycling of fire extinguisher powder: A global waste stream problem with the innovative solution and successful industrial operation in the UK.

PhosCycle's vision is to recycle up to 60% annually of the UK EFEP waste stream market within 12months of full-scale plant operation on behalf of the UK companies in our value chain.

PhosCycle has a thorough project plan including risk assessment and a carefully-considered budget, to address the challenge for the target-markets and deliver wide-ranging socio-economic benefits.
