Pioneering Geo-Locative Historical Storytelling with Next-Gen VPS XR

Abstract

This project embarks on an exciting journey to explore and establish the next frontier of storytelling through Extended Reality (XR) technology, synchronised with real-world locations. Our endeavour aims to unravel the potential of blending narrative art with cutting-edge XR technology, providing participants with an immersive experience that dynamically interacts with their physical location.

At the core of this endeavour lies the aspiration to create a compelling narrative experience that entices participants to engage with the story by physically navigating through locations. By leveraging advanced next-gen Visual Positioning System (VPS) technology, the project will seamlessly synchronise digital narrative elements with real-world locations, paving the way for a new genre of interactive storytelling.

The experimental narrative will be structured around a globally recognized intellectual property, which provides a rich tapestry of historical and fictional elements to draw upon. Enabling stories that unfold across a city landscape, with participants unlocking new narrative elements and interactions as they traverse through various locations.

The project is divided into two main phases: The initial phase is focused on the essential technical and narrative research and development, establishing the foundation upon which the immersive experience will be built. This includes the development of a robust VPS-based XR system capable of delivering a seamless and engaging user experience. The subsequent phase is focused on refining and expanding the narrative, based on feedback from initial tests, and preparing for a larger-scale deployment and creation of new types of experiences.

Alongside the development of the VPS XR experience, this project has a broader ambition to foster a culture of innovation and skill development within the UK, particularly in Wales. It aims to catalyse growth in the local creative industry, nurturing collaborations with global tech partners and foster knowledge transfer and job creation.

Through the successful realisation of this project, we aim to not only create a captivating new form of storytelling but also contribute significantly to Wales' aspirations as a leader in the global creative technology landscape.
