3D mobile gaming engine

Abstract

In 2010 we released Papa Sangre, the hit iPhone 'video game with no video' where you 'see’ with your ears. The software at the heart of the game is, in some ways, the most advanced audio engine for mobile devices. It understands the way the human ears and brain position sound, and—on the fly—outputs true binaural audio (also called 3D sound). Since the adventures of Papa Sangre, the engine has been licensed to a major brand —Wrigley's— to make another audio game, The Nightjar. Between the two games, Somethin' Else has racked up hundreds of thousands of downloads and is now widely viewed as developing the best audio games ever made.
We have identified a major market opportunity, and want to both capitalise on our early success in this market, and allow others to develop their own 3D audio projects by creating a new gaming engine. Specifically, by:
• Turning our audio engine into a licensable, commercial product, where developers can license some or all of its capabilities
• Spring-cleaning the code base to create an SDK, plus API documentation, so other developers can work with our technology and code more easily
• Beta testing the code with developers, the marketing community and relevant parties, culminating in a hack day for gamers, to be held at our studios in Shoreditch
• Creating ‘Big Field Mode’ by utilising the iOS geolocation features so we can create, for example, location-specific, choose your own adventure 3D audio games that you take to the streets to experience (completely unique)
• Undertaking a business case research project: which other mobile platforms should we build the engine to work on?

In addition to these products, we also hope to lower our own future overheads for creating more innovative 3D audio games/projects, open up gaming to the blind community by creating games that are brilliant but not designed ‘for’ blind people, and overall, stimulate innovation in this new, exciting and demonstrably lucrative area.
