Improved protein production and efficiency from beef cattle with reduced Greenhouse Gas emissions (IMPRO-BEEF)

Abstract

Improved protein production and efficiency from beef cattle with reduced Greenhouse Gas emissions (IMPRO-BEEF)

TSB Project number;- 11991 – 81175

This project seeks to improve the efficiency with which beef cattle production systems produce animal protein (beef) for supply into the human food chain. This will be achieved by utilising innovative approaches to identifying the most efficient beef producing animals from commercial beef herds and rolling out a selection programme that will be used by commercial beef farmers to breed from the most efficient animals and thereby improve the economic efficiency of their businesses. It is also widely recognised that improving the efficiency of beef production systems is the most viable way to reduce the Greenhouse Gas Emissions from these animals. By harnessing the "win-win" aspects of both economic and environmental improvements through efficiency gains, this project is perfectly aligned with the Governmental objective of "Sustainable Intensification" of the UK based food chain.
