Abstract

Maintaining UK’s infrastructure is critical. Inspection and maintenance of underground assets is dangerous and fraught with difficulties. This infrastructure is aging and a large proportion of assets is unmapped or, at best, mapped by inaccurate, decades old blueprints. Physical access is restricted and dangerous, with a number of fatalities reported annually (gas poisoning in sewers, electrocution or falls). Enabling the inspection, assessment and maintenance of the underground and confined infrastructure by autonomous robotic vehicles result in significant cost savings, improved asset performance, extend asset life and prevent injuries and loss of life while reducing outages and disruptive emergency maintenance. Q-Bot specialises in robotic solutions for the built environment, that allow easier, cheaper, safer and more effective repair, maintenance and upgrade of buildings and infrastructure. The initial application was the retrofit of underfloor insulation to buildings at a fraction of the current cost, and with none of the hassle of traditional methods. The patent pending technology and process uses a robot to apply insulation and validate it, in an environment which is currently inaccessible for human operatives without prohibitive disruption and expense. It is now being commercialised with a number of clients including Local Authorities and Housing Associations.
