Wood fibre insulation from sawmill residue to produce insulated fabricated timber components for closed-loop, resource efficient building

Lead Participant: PLANT FIBRE TECHNOLOGY LTD

Abstract

The objective of this study is to assess the feasibility of manufacturing a loose fill, wood fibre insulation product from sawmill residue for use primarily within fabricated timber building components to create a low carbon, resource efficient and cost competitive building solution. The protype insulation products will be assessed for key performance requirements such as thermal, fire, durability and resistance to settlement. The need for additives for improved fire or durability will be considered. This study aims to deliver a specification for the manufacture and performance of a loose WFI insulation. The central innovation relates to the use of sawmill residue to produce wood fibre insulation for use in timber components produced by the sawmill in a closed loop process.
